SA private school fees rise drastically from between 4.5 to 6 per cent in 2015

by Rohan Feegrade on 24 February 2015

Adelaide's leading private colleges are siting reasons such as 'IT levies, building funds and other fixed costs as justification for raising school fees by as much as 6%.

There is no doubt that education is an expensive business to run. The retention, management and training of high quality teachers are a justifiable and realistic expense for all top-performing schools. It is well know that teachers are the single biggest influence on student achievement and improvement, not to mention the student's emotional wellbeing while studying. For these reasons, a financial investment in staff by schools is necessary and must not be compromised.

Information technology and the integration of ICT's into the taught curriculum are also essential in developing learners for an ever changing and evolving world. The career's our students will enter in ten or fifteen years time will demand a certain level of digital literacy, some more than others. This places Information technology and the integration of ICT's as an important focus area for school funding, hence higher fee schedules.

As for building funds and other fixed costs, this is where the water becomes murky.  Schools must maintain a level of transparency and willingness to communicate with their school community what these projects cost and why they are committing funds to them.  The best schools must be willing to demonstrate that they are committed to dedicating most of their finances on investing in teaching and teacher quality. While some schools are doing this, others are not and continue to invent justifications for their excessive, unnecessary and illogical spending. At the end of the day, this expense is passed onto the fee payer - the families with students at the school.
