How the new Gonski 2.0 works for you and your children's school

by Rohan Feegrade on 18 May 2017

David Gonski is a South African born, Australian businessman. He is also a leading philanthropist and a patron of many valued foundations nationally.

Back in 2011, under the previous Labor government, a reform to the way we fund schools was put forward by David Gonski and was called the 'Gonski report'. This report identified a prescribed method and model to fund schools using an evidence and needs based lens, there by being a more fair way of distributing government funding to schools, both public and private.

With a change of government, initially the funding model was scraped. However, the Turnbull government recently announced that they have developed a 're-hashed' and 'more realistic' version of the funding model, calling it 'Gonksi 2.0'. This new model proposes the following funding over the next ten years:

- $17.5 Billion by 2017
- $22.1 Billion by 2021
- $30.6 Billion by 2027

The proposed funding will see an investment in Australian children and their education, beyond the rate of inflation, despite the new reform being slashed by $22 billion in comparison to the initial proposal in 2011.

Many school principals, including many high profile private school heads, have praised the new reform as being transparent, consistent and not affected by school sector. This is a crucial federal funding injection and should be viewed as a positive step towards investing in our children's future.
