What parents need to know before choosing a school

by Rohan Feegrade on 27 October 2016

Before choosing a school for your children, it is important to have an understanding of what it is your family need from a school. The days of sending your children to the school at the end of the road are now over.  The current educational climate has called for schools to be more specialized and focused in different areas from teaching philosophies such as Steiner, Montessori, Waldorf etc. to religious orientation and single-sex as opposed to coeducational classrooms.

The questions parents must ask themselves revolve around understanding each of the different offerings that are available to them and match this with the learning needs of your children. Coupled with this should be aligning your values with not only that of the different learning philosophies, but also each schools individual ethos, values and vision.

Practical considerations can also be an important part of what you need to know. This may be considering the logistics of getting to the school and this working with your families schedule, school fee budgets, yours and your children's existing friendship networks and other logistic considerations.

Understanding the programs each school offer is crucial. Do you know the difference between an International Baccalaureate school offering the IB program (PYP, MYP and Diploma) and a school, which offers only the SACE pathway? Certain students may also require additional learning support or academic extension programs. Each school manages this differently. Schools also offer quite different extra and co-curricular offerings too.

Only by engaging with schools, asking questions and doing some research, can parents be fully informed to make what is certainly one of the most important decisions you can make for your children.
